Mine get captured from time to time and I've never found a way to do it except wait out the prison timer then to pick them up for the farthest city in the world from where you're standing when they get released. it will happen automatically when either the ai player puts them to the ransom broker or the event at a castle/town they get stowed in

NPC Lord/companion death rate seems to be pretty friggin high when you participate in a fight, so I just have them assigned to division VIII and have them retreat by pressing 8 + F1 + F7 when a big battle is about to start.
